One the most important deed in the early of Dzulhijjah is Arafah fasting in 9th of Dzulhijjah. Some people may ask why fast before the Eid. This fasting has so many benefits, and it is not supposed to be left by all of Muslims in the world. Muslims who don’t do hajj should do fasting before the day of Eid Al Adha.
It is based on the Hadiths in Muslims no 1162. It was said that Arafah fasting in 9th Dzulhijjah could erase last year sins and a year later sins. Imam Nawawi stated that Arafah is Sunnah. The reason why it is not an obligatory is that of Ummu Fadhl's habits. It could be said that most of the Muslim scholars agree that Arafah fasting is Sunnah and people who don’t do hajj are suggested to do the fasting. Let’s see the hadiths below about how people back then did debate on this Arafah fasting to determine whether it is Sunnah or obligatory.
While people who do Hajj is not suggested to do fasting before Eid Al Adha. It is based on Hadeeth Bukhari number 1988 and Muslim number 1123. It was told that there were people who did a debate on Arafah fasting whether Prophet Muhammad Shalallahu’alaihi wa Sallam did the fasting or not. Some of them said that he did the fasting, but some of them didn't. Then Ummu Fadhl sent a bowl of milk to Prophet Muhammad Shalallahu'alaihi Wa Sallam, and then he drank the milk.
While about the elimination of the sin of last year and sin of a year later of Muslims due to Arafah fasting, some of the Muslim scholars have a different view on this. Some of them said that it is an only small sin, but Ibnu Taimiyah rahimahullah said that it is not only small sin but also a big sin because the hadith is general. That’s why fast before Eid Al Adha because the big benefits that Muslims could take.
